best swimming pool floats

Okay, so this past weekend was brutal. Hot, humid, zero motivation to move. Best thing? Cool off in a swimming pool. But just floating around gets old, right? I figured it was high time to find some decent floats and actually figure out which ones hold up.

The Plan & Shopping

First things first, I dragged myself onto the computer. Didn’t want anything fancy, just stuff that actually worked without costing a fortune. Spent maybe an hour browsing different websites, you know the drill. Ended up picking five different styles that looked interesting:

best swimming pool floats
  • The Classic Rubber Ring: Bright yellow one, seemed sturdy.
  • A Giant Inflatable Swan: Gotta have one, right? Found a white one with a pink beak.
  • A Lounge Chair Float: Kinda like a recliner? Figured it’d be comfy.
  • A Pizza Slice Float: Just for fun, looked cute.
  • A Donut Tube: Big colourful unicorn thing my niece would go crazy for.

Clicked order. A few days later, big box shows up on the porch. Felt like Christmas morning, only sweatier.

Blowing Them Up

Okay, here’s where the workout started. Grabbed the electric pump – seriously, without it, this would’ve been a day-long nightmare. Plugged it in and got to work.

  • The Classic Ring was easy. Pop it on, zip-zip-zip, firm and round in under 60 seconds.
  • The Swan… oh boy. More pieces! Body, neck, head. Took a good 15 minutes wrestling it, attaching head to neck, neck to body. Sweat dripping by the end, but it looked majestic.
  • The Lounge Chair wasn’t too bad. A little bulky. Blew up the seat and the back separately. Seemed sturdy enough when I clipped them together.
  • The Pizza Slice was the fastest. One single chamber, puffed up in like 30 seconds. Looked good enough to eat!
  • The Unicorn Donut inflated quickly too, but damn, that plastic felt a bit thin. Hoped it wouldn’t pop.

Threw them all in the garage overnight, just to be sure they held air.

Pool Testing Day

Pool party for one! Got there early, tossed all five floats in. First thing? None were leaking overnight! Good sign.

  • Hopped on the Classic Ring. Simple. Does what it says. Floats you. Easy to flip off of though, especially trying to climb on!
  • Tried the Swan. Climbing onto its back was awkward as hell. Felt a bit unstable once I was up there – kept wobbling sideways. Looked amazing in pics but kinda impractical.
  • The Lounge Chair Float was my personal winner. So comfy! Like floating on a cloud. Easy to get on, back support was great. Leaned back, closed my eyes… perfection. Only downside? Takes up SO much space in the pool.
  • Jumped onto the Pizza Slice. It’s fun! Super easy to hop on. Buoyant, but doesn’t give much support. More for giggles than relaxing. Great for kids.
  • The Unicorn Donut was slippery! Tried sitting in the hole, felt a bit tippy at first. But laying belly-down across it with my legs dangling? Actually brilliant. Super relaxing way to float face-down. Material still felt cheap though.

Durability Check

Left ‘em out in the sun and water all afternoon. Maybe 4-5 hours total?

  • Classic Ring: Solid. No leaks, shape held.
  • Swan: Uh oh. Noticed the neck connection seam looked stressed. Later found a tiny leak near it. Sadness.
  • Lounge Chair: Good. Valves felt strong, no sagging.
  • Pizza Slice: Held up fine. Didn’t see any issues.
  • Unicorn Donut: Surprisingly fine! That thin plastic held its own against splashes and pokes.

The Verdict

So, which one is the “best”? Turns out, it really depends on what you want!

  • For pure no-fuss floating: Classic Ring (just be careful climbing on!).
  • For ultimate comfort & relaxation: Lounge Chair Float (if you have the pool space!).
  • For fun visuals & photos: Swan or Pizza Slice (but Swan quality was dodgy).
  • For a unique, relaxing belly float: The Donut style was great.

The Swan was the biggest disappointment. Cool to look at, stressful to use and build. Pizza Slice and Unicorn Donut delivered surprisingly well for being novelty items. Lounge Chair was my personal fav, worth the extra space it needed. Classic Ring? Reliable. Overall, no disasters, learned what worked for different moods! Just gotta avoid that swan neck next time.
