Getting the Idea & Prepping
Okay, so last Thursday rolls around and it’s hot, I mean seriously hot. We all know the drill. I’m staring at my sad, empty backyard thinking about the kids. We needed pool stuff, stat. Like everyone else short on time, I figured, “Hey, Walmart’s right there, how bad can their pool toys be?” Plus, they gotta be cheap, right?
So I got this crazy idea. Why not just go there, buy a bunch of the popular-looking inflatable toys, and actually test them out over the weekend? Not just stare at the boxes, but get ’em wet, let the kids go wild, and see what happens. Give folks the real deal before they spend their cash. That’s the goal.

The Hunt at Walmart
Grabbed my keys and drove over Saturday morning. Man, the pool toy aisle was packed already! People shoving carts everywhere. Found the inflatable section – it was huge! Saw stuff I recognized from ads:
- Big colorful giant flamingo everyone always gets (Seemed sturdy-ish?)
- That unicorn float with the rainbow mane everyone is posting online about
- Basic cheap inflatable ring sets for kids
- A couple of those big inflatable loungers for adults
- A bright rubber beach ball just for kicks
Stood there for ages comparing prices and boxes. Grabbed one of each type that looked decently popular. Checkout line felt like forever! Forgot my reusable bags at home too.
Blow Up Time & First Impressions
Got home, dumped everything on the patio. First challenge was pumping this stuff up. The cheap ring set came with a tiny hand pump – took ages. My arms were jelly! The flamingo and unicorn needed the big electric pump we borrowed from the neighbor – thank goodness for that! Even that took a few minutes per toy.
First thoughts:
- The cheap rings felt super thin. Like really flimsy plastic. Knew they wouldn’t last long.
- The flamingo and unicorn looked bright and cheerful, but the plastic felt kinda cheap close up compared to pool store stuff.
- The adult lounger seemed okay? Wasn’t super thick but felt alright inflated.
- Beach ball was… a beach ball. No surprises there.
The Real Test: Water, Kids & Sunshine
Sunday was the big day! Filled up the pool. The kids were bouncing off the walls. Threw everything in.
- Cheap Ring Set: Yeah, called it. One kid accidentally knelt on one getting in… POP! RIP before lunchtime. Total write-off.
- Giant Flamingo: Held the little ones okay. Bigger kids were a no-go. Seemed stable enough at first. BUT! By the end of the day, noticed a tiny slow leak near the seam at the bottom. Had to top it up once.
- Unicorn Float: This was the most used! Kids fought over it. Held up under splashing and climbing. The colors stayed bright, no leaks immediately obvious. Looked pretty like the pictures.
- Adult Lounger: Tried to relax on it. Honestly, it felt a bit wobbly. Not super confident lying back fully. The material felt thin supporting an adult. Okay for floating feet maybe?
- Beach Ball: Took a beating! Kids threw it around, kicked it, squished it. No pops, no tears. Did its job perfectly.
Aftermath & Final Verdict
Cleaned everything up Monday morning. Hosed off grass clippings and sunscreen sludge. The cheap ring set was in the trash already. Flamingo felt noticeably less firm – that slow leak was real. Unicorn still looked great, no obvious issues! Lounger felt a bit limp too. Beach ball was wet but fine.
So, honest? Here’s the real talk:
- You absolutely get what you pay for. The cheaper it is, the more likely it will rip or leak quickly.
- The big character floats (like the unicorn) seem like a better bang for your buck than the super cheap stuff. They lasted the day without failing.
- Don’t expect pool store quality! The plastic feels thinner, seams aren’t always perfect. Slow leaks happen.
- Adult stuff? Proceed with caution. Feels flimsy for actual lounging unless you’re very light.
- Simple stuff like beach balls? Walmart wins! Cheap, cheerful, and surprisingly durable for the price.
Overall? It’s cheap fun for a day or maybe a few uses with care. If you want stuff to last a whole summer… maybe spend more elsewhere. But for a quick splash and decent pics without breaking the bank? Yeah, the main character floats are probably worth the gamble if you get them on sale and aren’t rough on ’em. Hope this helps someone!
